Murud is loacated in the Raigad district (western coast) of Maharashtra. Janjira (arabic word Zazeera means island ) is the famous fort in the sea water to the south of Murud. Murud Janjira Fort is one of the strongest marine fort in India. Sailboats from Rajapuri Jetty (Rajapui – a small village on the coast) is the way to connect to fort. Another way is from Dighi port by speed boat.

The Murud Janjira fort built in 22 acres of area. It took 22 years to built. The main gate of fort faces towards the Rajapuri Shore and can only be seen, once you reach nearby to it (about 40 feet). It has another small gate towards open sea to escape in emergency.

The fort wall is about 40 feet high and still have some cannons mounted on them. Now these cannons are lies in ruin.

It is amazing to see the Sweet water well/pond in the mid of the salted water sea.

The Murud Janjira fort is now under the control of Government of India. Maratha King Sambhaji Maharaj – son of the Great Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, built a fort Padmadurg (also known as Kansa Fort) in sea. It is built in the north-east of Janjira to control the activities in Arabian sea. This fort is also now under the control of GoI.

Tips for planning trip to Murud Janjira Marine Fort

  1. Carry some food and water bottle with you as there is no food and water facility inside the fort.
  2. Try to avoid to visit in hot sunny day due to high humidity.
  3. Be careful while getting in & out the boat ( The persons on the boat are very helpful).
  4. Carry hat and Goggle.
  5. The wait time for entering and exiting in Fort, is too long sometimes, so plan accordingly.
